Scientists have devised a new way to search for dark matter: using giant crystals of sucrose, or sugar. So far, this search has yielded a bitter aftertaste: no results have been found yet.

Researchers assume that dark matter exists because of the gravitational pull it seems to exert on galaxies. But despite decades of searching for possible dark matter particles, scientists have yet to find any. Many of these searches focus on so-called weakly interacting massive particles (WIMPs). These particles have long been the most promising candidates for dark matter. Yet, even the most sensitive experiments have so far yielded no trace of them.
